Accents allow us to feel part of a social group, and can give us a sense of identity and belonging.

These factors include maturational constraints, speaker characteristics such as motivation, gender, personality variables and oral and auditory capacities as well as the learning context and social factors.

Dialects and accents developed historically when groups of language users lived in relative isolation, without regular contact with other people using the same language. Invasion and migration also helped to influence dialect development at a regional level. Just take the Midlands, for example.

The capacity for accent change among adults has been well-documented by linguistic researchers, over both the short-term (temporarily in the context of a single conversation) and the long-term (slowly evolving based on exposure to other accents over a period of years).

Anderson is bidialectal. With her English accent and background, she was mocked and felt out of place as a teenager in the American Midwest and soon adopted a Midwestern accent. To this day, she easily shifts between her American and English accents.
