Previous Military ID Card Types Based on Eligibility Uniformed Services ID Cards were issued in 4 different colors, tan, red, blue and green and are based on the recipients’ eligibility.

According to Title 18, US Code, Part I, Chapter 33, Section 701, Official Badges, Identification Cards, Other Insignia, the photocopying of military identification is illegal and violations of this law are punishable by fine or imprisonment.

Initial issuance of the Next Generation USID card will begin on July 31, 2020 at select DoD ID card facilities, with phased implementation at all DoD ID card facilities projected to be complete in December 2020.

Officials announced in 2020 that military family members, retirees and their family members and certain others will get new ID cards as they renew or replace their IDs over the next four years. It will be similar to the common access card used by military personnel and DoD personnel, but without the chip.

Blue – Retired members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Tan (DD FORM 1173) – Dependents of active duty and retired members. The card has the same color as DD Form 2765.

A military ID card qualifies as a valid form of photo ID in applying for a U.S. passport. A military ID card is also valid proof of age when attempting to buy alcohol in the U.S. since it contains a birthdate and a photo.

How to get a Military ID Card. You must have a sponsor to guide you through the process. Register with the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) by completing Form 1172-2. Visit a Real-Time Automated Personnel Identification System (RAPIDS) site for final verification and processing.
