Dutch Addresses (how to read them) The first line is the name of the street followed by the number. The first two digits of the postcode indicate a city and a region. The following two digits and letters indicate a range of house numbers usually on the same street.

Dutch people quickly start calling people by their first name. In the Netherlands, a younger person, a child, a relative, a friend, or an acquaintance are addressed with an informal “je/jij” (“you”). The formal “u” (“you”) is used to address people you do not know, or are only slightly acquainted with.

How it works

1. Name of the addressee.

3. Postcode and city / town. The numbers and letters of the postcode are separated by a single space. Postcode and city / town are separated by a double space.

The Netherlands is always referred to by English speakers as the Netherlands. It is incorrect in English to leave it out in running text.

Perishable foodstuffs are prohibited by most parcel couriers, at least when using non-specialised services. These can normally be sent via courier. Chocolate, or chocolate-based products, are perishable if they need to be refrigerated in order not to spoil.

Half of all post boxes are to be emptied just once a day as the Royal Mail seeks to cut costs. Late collections will be axed for 45,000 to 50,000 post boxes as postmen and women are instructed to empty them as they carry out their deliveries.
