Tulle spools usually contain about 25 yards (23 m) of tulle. Therefore, 2 or 3 spools of tulle may be enough for a child’s size tutu, but you may need 4 or 5 spools for an adult’s small or medium tutu, and 7 to 8 spools for a large or extra-large.

To make this DIY tulle skirt, you will need approximately 3-4 yards of 118 inches (300 cm) super wide soft tulle. However, if you can’t find 118-inches wide tulle, don’t worry.

Cut the Tulle For short tutus, cut three or four rolls of 6”-wide tulle into 22” strips (more tulle = fuller skirt). For long tutus, cut seven or eight rolls of 6”-wide tulle into the following length strips: 12 – 18 months = 24”, 2T = 30”, 3T = 35”, 4T = 38”, 5T = 42”, 6T = 46”, 7 yrs. = 50”, 8 yrs. = 54”.

Soft Tulle. If your final number (length+waist radius) is 27 or less, you’ll need about 6 yards (54″ inches wide – if you can’t find 54″ inch wide fabric, you’ll need to buy 12 yards). If your final number is more than 27, you’ll need about 12 yards.
