The Fun they Had Summary The story opens with Margie writing in her diary about an old book that Tommy had found. Margie was reminded of her grandfather who had once talked about his grandfather who went to an actual school where the students were taught by human teachers.

1 Answer. Tommy told Margie that in older times teacher didn’t live in the house to teach a students. He described that the old kind of school used to be a special building where all kids studied together. There were hundreds of students studying and playing together.

Margie is eleven year old and Tommy is thirteen year old. Margie wrote, “Today Tommy found a real book!”. Margie found it strange that the book had yellow and wrinkled pages. Words in the book were still and did not move the way they were supposed to on a screen.

They turned the yellow pages of the book and found it funny to read the words that didn’t move like they are supposed to move on the screen. When they turned back to the page before, it still had the same words on it like the first time.

Answer : In the short story ‘The Fun They Had’ by Isaac Asimov, Tommy compared the real book with his telebooks and called the real book a waste. This was because he thought that after reading the printed books one would have to throw them away as they could not be reused.

1 Answer. Margie’s school was at home. She had a mechanical teacher, telebooks, no other students were there in the class and work was fed in by the mechanical teacher by punch codes. Whereas, the old schools had proper buildings, many students, human teachers who gave homework and asked questions.

Margie and Tommy had mechanical teachers. They were computers which had preloaded lessons on different subjects according to the learner’s level.

Answer. Margie found it strange that the words printed on the book were still instead of moving the way which they did on the screen. She also found it odd that the words on a page always remained the same as the first tome they were read. Beside, the idea that someone wrote about school was itself strange for Margie.
