6 Spontaneous combustion. Spontaneous combustion is the phenomenon in which a hydrocarbon (or a chemical substance) substance unexpectedly bursts into flame without apparent cause. In ordinary combustion, the hydrocarbon is deliberately heated to its ignition point to make it burn.

Materials that may catch fire by spontaneous ignition are:

• Rags and waste with oil and paint residues.
• Towels and linen, during laundering and drying.
• Paint overspray or material from a paint spray booth.
• Coal.
• Haystacks.
• Green waste piles and compost.
• A number of chemical substances, such as cellulose nitrate.

In December 2010, the death of Michael Faherty, a 76-year-old man in County Galway, Ireland, was recorded as “spontaneous combustion” by the coroner.

As the temperature rises above 130°F (55°C), a chemical reaction occurs and may sustain itself. This reaction does not require oxygen, but the flammable gases produced are at a temperature above their ignition point.

The likely explanation for suspected cases of spontaneous human combustion, then, is that there is an external source of ignition—a match, a cigarette, an electrical spark—that sets off the wick effect, but the evidence of it is destroyed by the fire.

“Excessive moisture is the most common cause of hay fires,” Schroeder says.” Odd as it might seem, wet hay is more likely to lead to a spontaneous-combustion fire than dry hay.” High-moisture haystacks and bales can catch on fire because they have chemical reactions that build heat.

Large manure piles can spontaneously combust during conditions of extreme heat. Once ignition temperature is reached, combustion occurs with oxidizers present (oxygen). Nitrate film, when improperly stored, can deteriorate into an extremely flammable condition and combust.

Spontaneous combustion can occur when materials self-heat, reaching a high enough temperature for ignition to occur, according to the National Park Service. In the case of manure, microbes inside the dung can release heat until “it erupts into fire,” according to Wired magazine.

You won’t find fresh feces to be all that flammable, as they contain lots of water. Dried feces will burn fine, though I wouldn’t recommend trying to cook over such a fire. There are parts of Africa where dried animal droppings are the major source of heat.
