The Eucharist (/ˈjuːkərɪst/; also known as Holy Communion and the Lord’s Supper among other names) is a Christian rite that is considered a sacrament in most churches, and as an ordinance in others.

Once consecrated by a priest in the name of Jesus, bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ. Non-Catholics may not participate in Communion. The bread, known as the Host, embodies Jesus and can therefore be prayed to. For Protestants, the ritual only serves to commemorate Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Some Protestant churches serve communion each week during the Sunday service. Some Protestant churches schedule communion once a month; for example, on the first Sunday of the month.

Although the sign of the cross dates to ante-Nicene Christianity, it was rejected by some of the Reformers and is absent from some forms of Protestantism. Other Protestants and Restorationist Christians do not use it all.

Beyond the historical account, the great fish also stands as a picture of God’s deliverance and mercy. The account clearly shows that the fish was Jonah’s means of salvation. It was also a sign of the greater salvation offered through Christ.
