In noseriding, the surfboard cuts through the water. Once on the front end, the entire surfboard behind becomes emerged on the water, most times. The front of the board generates lift to counterbalance the weight of the surfer.

A noserider has more foam throughout the board. It is wider and tends to have a rounded rail all the way through the back of the board. Most of the noserider boards have a single-fin setup. This unique classic template was shaped for riding small, peeling point breaks or beach breaks.

LONGBOARD – 8’6” Appealing to those who are looking for more volume and better glide than a funboard, but aren’t interested in a full-size longboard. Great performance in thigh-high to slightly over head-high waves, this board is a tremendous wave catcher.

They pack more volume, handle a wider variety of waves, but can still be surfed at a relatively high level. They may also end up limiting the waves you are motivated to go out and surf, unless you build your quiver appropriately. A high performance shortboard is a lot more fun in good quality waves.

Learning to surf requires spending a lot of time on your board, and that’s much harder on a 5 or 6-foot shortboard that doesn’t have enough buoyancy for your weight. Even on a longer surfboard, it can take at least 6 months to learn to consistently catch a wave, pop up, and get to the shoulder of the wave.

Although you can still perch up on the nose for some tip time, you often see these boards being surfed in a similar way to a High Performance Short Board (HPSB). This is an extremely fun type of board to surf if you are into getting high performance but still want a longboard.

That time underwater can feel like an eternity, but in fact, most hold-downs last only five seconds. In large surf, that may stretch to 12 seconds. Even a big-wave surfer subjected to a two-wave hold-down will be underwater only for about half a minute.

A good length to start out with is 9’6”, but I would recommend going even longer like 9’8” or 9 ’10”. A bigger longboard will give you that glide you need to cover a lot of water easily.
