Second graders are polishing a wide range of basic writing skills, including writing legibly, using capitalization and punctuation correctly (most of the time!), and moving from invented spelling to more accurate spelling. Second graders can organize their writing to include a beginning, middle, and end.

In English, the subject of a command, order, or suggestion — you, the person being directed — is usually left out of the sentence and is said to be the understood subject: [You] Step lively there or I’ll leave you behind! Before assembling the swingset, [you] read these instructions carefully.

1 : the person or thing discussed : topic She’s the subject of rumors. Let’s change the subject. 2 : an area of knowledge that is studied in school Geography is my favorite subject. 3 : a person who owes loyalty to a monarch or state. 4 : a person under the authority or control of another.

A complete thought consists of a general subject (a topic) and some kind of “spin” or controlling idea on the topic. For example, the controlling idea could be the speaker’s intent, understanding, perspective, or opinion about the topic.

️A sentence is a group of words that tells a whole story. We call it a complete thought.

2nd Grade Writing Goals

1. 2nd graders are expected to write throughout the day at school.
2. Children’s sentences begin to grow, and they add descriptive words and more complex ideas.
3. Children begin to look over or “revise” what they just wrote – they try to correct spelling, add punctuation, and make it sound better.

By the time kids start second grade, they’re expected to know about whole numbers (0, 1, 2, 3, etc.) and place value in two-digit numbers (like knowing that the “2” in “24” means “20”). Kids begin grouping numbers into tens and ones by the end of first grade.
