The box-office dud “The Mummy” sank Universal’s hopes for a grand franchise. But the studio is rebooting it on a smaller scale, starting with “The Invisible Man.”

‘The Mummy’ was released on June 9, 2017. It has been more than two years now and we haven’t heard anything about the sequel. Our guess is that the sequel or another spin-off will happen at some point, but Tom Cruise may not be involved with it. The makers may have to go with a fresh slate and some younger names.

February 2020 has seen the first film in the thrice-rebooted Dark Universe, The Invisible Man. It stars Elisabeth Moss as Cecilia, a woman being tormented by her ex – who is supposedly dead. The film is a metaphor for domestic violence, in particular the manipulation of one partner by the other known as gaslighting.

After the success of the latest Mission: Impossible film though, Cruise is back and he has just added one more interesting project to his increasingly busy plate. First announced February 2020, Monster Mash is a different take on Universal’s monsters in that it is a musical. The film will be helmed by Matt Stawski, who is a Grammy award nominated music video director. The idea stems from Stawski, and the script is written by Will Widger (Black List).

But at the end of the movie, soldier of fortune Nick Morton (Tom Cruise) stabs himself with Set’s magical dagger, which then gives him the power of Set, i.e. the powers of the Mummy. He kisses Ahmanet, turning her into a withered husk, and then uses his newfound powers to raise Jenny (Annabelle Wallis) from the dead.

In Alex Kurtzman’s The Mummy, Tom Cruise plays a new character named Nick Morton. The titular mummy (Sofia Boutella) was mummified and buried alive after trying to incite a coup when her pharaoh father gave her birthright to her baby brother 5,000 years ago.

Apparently, Cruise’s excessive control of the movie changed the story almost completely, resulting in the mess that became The Mummy, a movie that thinks Cruise is “a young man.” Blockbusters often have massive teams of people working on the movie, required to come together to make the most of the millions spent on it.
