The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Regret is repentance.” (ibn Majah 4252) Being regretful is a great indicator that the person committing the sin feels sincere guilt and hates the sin. This also means that this feeling cannot be accompanied by enjoyment whenever remembering past sins or the desire to return to it in the future.

Allah says (in a hadith qudsi), “Repentance is of no effect for those who commit sins constantly until when death faces one of them, he says: Verily I repent now.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever repents before the sun rises from its west, Allah will accept his repentance.” [Reported by Muslim]

Principles of Repentance

1. We Must Recognize Our Sins. To repent, we must admit to ourselves that we have sinned.
2. We Must Feel Sorrow for Our Sins.
3. We Must Forsake Our Sins.
4. We Must Confess Our Sins.
5. We Must Make Restitution.
6. We Must Forgive Others.
7. We Must Keep the Commandments of God.

Say, “O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, he is the most Forgiving and the most Merciful. …

There is no original sin in Islam. It is the act of leaving what God has prohibited and returning to what he has commanded. The word denotes the act of being repentant for one’s misdeeds, atoning for those misdeeds, and having a strong determination to forsake those misdeeds (remorse, resolution, and repentance).

To escape from this major sin is to regret the deed, he must promises not to do that act again, and repent it sincerely to Allah SWT. Below here Allah says in Quran. “But whosoever repents after his crime and does righteous good deeds (by obeying Allah), then verily, Allah will pardon him (accept his repentance).

Becoming better than the condition you were in before your repentance means you are safe, Allah has accepted your repentance and has blessed you with goodness. No one should feel safe while he does not know the decree of Allah for him; fear should accompany you until you hear the angels say, as Allah Almighty says in the Quran: …

The Shaytaan may make sin attractive to him, so he wrongs himself (commits sin) and falls into that which Allaah has forbidden. But Allaah is Kind to His slaves, and His mercy encompasses all things. Whoever repents after doing wrong, Allaah will accept his repentance, for Allaah is Forgiving and Merciful.
