Mammoths were large proboscideans that roamed the Earth during the Pliocene and Pleistocene (~5 mya to 11,500 years ago). They belong to the group of true elephants (Elephantidae) and are closely related to the two living species. africanuvus, a smaller mammoth from northern Africa, proved to be a “dead end” lineage.

The Asian elephant appears to be the closest living relative of the woolly mammoth, now extinct.

As members of the family Elephantidae, woolly mammoths were themselves elephants. Their last common ancestor with modern-day elephants lived somewhere in Africa about 6 million years ago. Scientists think woolly mammoths evolved about 700,000 years ago from populations of steppe mammoths living in Siberia.

The most observed difference between a mammoth and an elephant is their tusks. Mammoth’s tusks were more extensive than an elephant and more twisted and curved than an elephant’s tusk. The recorded tusk length of a mammoth is 16 feet, while the tusk length of an African elephant is 11 feet.

The woolly mammoth was well adapted to the cold environment during the last ice age. The woolly mammoth coexisted with early humans, who used its bones and tusks for making art, tools, and dwellings, and hunted the species for food. It disappeared from its mainland range at the end of the Pleistocene 10,000 years ago.

Now a team at Harvard University are working on bringing back the woolly mammoth. In order to do so, scientists need to be able to secure well-preserved remains of such animals in order to be able to revive a healthy set of mammoths. But it is near impossible to do so.

Dinosaurs were the dominant species for nearly 165 million years, during a period known as the Mesozoic Era. Small mammals are known to have lived with dinosaurs during the mammoth beasts’ final reign.

Dinosaurs lived from about 240 to 65 million years ago. Woolly mammoths and large saber- toothed cats lived about 3 million years ago. The first humans began 5 million years ago and modern humans began about 2 million years ago. No human ever saw a dinosaur, but humans did see wooly mammoths and saber-toothed cats.

Not everything big and dead is a dinosaur. Even more distantly related to dinosaurs are the marine reptiles, which include the plesiosaurs and ichthyosaurs. Mammoths and mastodons are mammals and did not appear until many millions of years after the close of the Cretaceous period.
