Ending of the Revenant Both the men appear heavily wounded, Glass sends the bleeding and broken body of his opponent down the river. In his last moments, Fitzgerald manages to keep a brave face and mocks Glass till his dying breath.

Unfortunately, many horses also died during the filming, as trip wires were used to bring the horses down. Of the 125 horses used in the film, 25 were killed outright or had to be put down.

He sees an image of his deceased wife, who appears occasionally in his memories throughout the film. When the camera returns to his face, Glass slowly turns and looks into the camera lens. For most of the film, Glass’s reason to live is a desperate desire for revenge and justice.

The most iconic scene in The Revenant, which is destined to become a classic moment of big screen brutality, is of course when the grizzly bear mauls Hugh Glass half to death in an agonizing steadicam shot that goes on for several minutes (plus an eternity).

The Revenant is based on the highly recognised figure in American history, Hugh Glass. Hugh Glass was an American frontiersman and fur trapper working as a guide for General William Henry Ashley in 1823, which is when his encounter with the bears took place.

Much of the film was shot in the mountains of Alberta, Canada, and the temperatures at one point crept underneath the -40 degree mark. “At that point,” DiCaprio later told an interviewer, “we couldn’t really open our eyes.

Your nerves are absolutely shredded.” He routinely had to be up before sunrise: Given that DiCaprio had to look like a man recovering (barely) from a grizzly attack while also weathering extreme elements, he had to wear a lot of makeup. In fact, he donned 47 prosthetics over the course of the shoot.

Someone has actually done that. At one point, DiCaprio’s character even crawls inside a horse carcass to keep warm (don’t worry, that was a bit of movie magic — the horse was made of latex and no animals were thrown off a cliff in the making of the film). …

To star in this film, DiCaprio agreed to a pay cut from his $20 million fee, in favor of splitting first-dollar gross points, meaning he received a percentage of cinema ticket sales. The risk paid off, as DiCaprio earned $50 million from the film, becoming his highest payday yet.
