Egypt is a Mediterranean country bordered by the Gaza Strip (Palestine) and Israel to the northeast, the Gulf of Aqaba and the Red Sea to the east, Sudan to the south, and Libya to the west.

Most educated Egyptians are fluent in English or French or both, in addition to Arabic. There are also other minor linguistic groups. The Beja of the southern section of the Eastern Desert use an Afro-Asiatic language of the Cushitic branch known as To Bedawi (though some speak Tigre and many use Arabic).

There really is no dress code in Egypt for tourists. But, you should know that Egyptian men dress rather smartly and are rather conservative – both the Islamic majority and the Christian minority. You will see most men in shirts, long trousers, and leather shoes. Rather no jeans, no t-shirts.

Women are not required by law to follow a dress code, so as a tourist, you can wear whatever you’d like; some people do. You do not need to cover your head in Egypt, but dress modestly. Wear pants or long skirts. Cairo is hot, so loose fitting pants are going to be more comfortable than a pair of skinny jeans.

Intimate behaviour in public (kissing and cuddling) is a no-no, and even holding hands is disapproved of. Whether you are right- or left-handed, the left hand is used for “unclean” functions, such as wiping your bottom or putting on shoes, so it is considered unhygienic to eat with it.

You will find most things very cheap compared with home. Drinks, especially imported can be exspensive or on a par with UK prices but food is reasonably cheap and meals out cost much less than here. Bargaining is expected and good bargains are to be had on things like clothes and Egyptian cotton.

Entering the Pyramids Tourists are allowed to enter all three of the great pyramids, for a fee, of course. That is, you can go into the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre and the Pyramid of Menkaure as long as you pay for a ticket.

Egypt is best visited in the fall (Sept-Nov) and spring (Feb-Apr). The weather is relatively chilly December through January, except in the south, where the winter is very pleasant. The summer is the only time to be avoided for climatic reasons.

Egypt is blessed with a whole lot of sunshine and very little rain. Generally, the hottest months are June through to August, and the coolest month is January. Rainfall is almost non-existent, except on the coast – when it does happen it’s during the winter months (December–March).

The best time to visit Egypt is between October and April, when temperatures are cooler, but still pleasantly warm across the country. This makes exploring the busy streets of Cairo, visiting the Pyramids in the desert, and exploring ancient Pharaonic tombs more comfortable and enjoyable.

The best times to visit Cairo are from March to April and from October to November. These short shoulder seasons welcome comfortable temperatures, fewer crowds and low hotel rates on most days of the week.

In their safety and security section, the US government describes the crime levels in Cairo and Alexandria as “moderate.” Note that most crimes that target foreigners are crimes of opportunity such as pickpocketing. Cairo is a busy city with lots of tourists and most of the hotels are running at almost full occupancy.

The short answer: Yes, it is safe to travel to Cairo. In fact, there may not be a better time to travel to Cairo. But whenever you travel, especially abroad, you should take some precautions.
