If it is to rename a city, the concerned state cabinet takes the decision. In case of renaming a state, a state legislature needs to pass a resolution for the same, which is then sent to the Centre.

Renaming streets can be initiated by members of the public or the Board of Supervisors. If a member of the public initiates the request, they must present their petition to Public Works with signatures from property owners whose lots are abutting the subject street.

Ethnically sensitive examples include the proposals by the Bharatiya Janata Party (1990, 2001) to rename Ahmedabad to Karnavati and Allahabad to Prayagraj, the latter finally being officially adopted in 2018. These two proposals are changes from the historically Mughal name to a Hindu native name.

Geographical renaming is the changing of the name of a geographical feature or area. This can range from the change of a street name to a change to the name of a country. Some names are changed locally but the new names are not recognised by other countries, especially when there is a difference in language.
