Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Sudan, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates. Saudi Arabia has led a major military intervention in Yemen, and organized a coalition of other nations to support its efforts, including Egypt, Jordan, Sudan, and Bahrain.

Aden was the capital of South Yemen until the country’s unification with the Yemen Arab Republic in 1990.

The Houthi movement is a predominately Zaidi Shia force. The Houthis have a complex relationship with Yemen’s Sunni Muslims; the movement has both discriminated against Sunnis, but also recruited and allied with them.

Yemen is an Islamic society. Nearly all Yemenis are Muslims, with approximately 65% belonging to the Shafi’i Sunni school of thought and approximately 34.5% belonging to the Zaydi Shia school of thought.

The Houthis have built their arsenal using local manufacturing, foreign expertise and parts smuggled in from Iran, their ally, and elsewhere. They also took over large swathes of Yemen’s conventional military, including Scud missiles, when they seized the capital in late 2014.

The civil war began in September 2014 when Houthi forces took over the capital city Sana’a, which was followed by a rapid Houthi takeover of the government. Concurrently, a coalition led by Saudi Arabia launched military operations by using air strikes to restore the former Yemeni government.

The World Has Left Yemen to Die. In a dedicated ward of the Al-Nasser Hospital, babies are treated for malnutrition—they’re just two of the estimated 1.8 million acutely malnourished children under age five. Yemen’s depleted health ministry relies on humanitarian organizations to provide medical care.

Critical levels of violence, to include armed conflict, artillery shelling, and air strikes, persist throughout the country. There are also reports of landmines throughout Yemen. There is a very high risk of kidnapping, and detention of U.S. citizens in Yemen, particularly dual national Yemeni-Americans.

Why? “The situation remains extremely volatile and dangerous. High levels of violence persist throughout Syria, including full scale military operations involving the use of small arms, tanks, artillery and aircraft. A number of chemical weapons attacks have taken place across Syria.

The famine is the direct result of the Saudi Arabian-led intervention in Yemen and blockade. These actions led to the UN accusing the Saudi-led coalition of committing war crimes and having a “complete disregard for human life”. 1,500 schools were damaged and destroyed during Yemeni Civil War.

The majority of land, sea and air ports in Yemen are closed until further notice, with only very limited international flights taking place.
