The U.S. has embassies in all countries it recognizes apart from Bhutan, Iran, Maldives, North Korea, Syria and Yemen. It has ‘interest sections’ in other nation’s embassies in Iran and Syria. It also has a de facto embassy in Taiwan.

An embassy is the base for a country’s diplomatic mission abroad – meaning all of the political, cultural and social relationships between the states. There will only be one embassy for one nation in another country, as it is where the country’s ambassador works (and sometimes resides).

This is a list of diplomatic missions in the United States. At present, 178 nations maintain diplomatic missions to the United States in the capital, Washington, D.C. Eight nations also attribute their missions at the United Nations in New York City as their official embassies to the United States.

Republic of Iraq

The US Embassy remains open currently for limited emergency services only. US citizens who require emergency assistance should visit the Embassy’s website for more information.

Chinese Consulate-General, Houston

The US has ordered China to close its consulate in Houston, Texas, by Friday – a move described as “political provocation” by Beijing. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the decision was taken because China was “stealing” intellectual property.

The July 23 closure of the consulate is part of U.S. efforts to push back against the Chinese Communist Party’s violations of U.S. sovereignty. The United States has rejected the “blind engagement” that has allowed the CCP to take advantage of other countries.

Most other governmental organizations have some form of burn bag system to destroy documents deemed of a Top Secret, Secret, Classified, or other similar nature. Overseas military outposts and diplomatic missions frequently have emergency disposal procedures in place for the rapid burning of classified materials.
