Now that we have a good background and foundation on the color theory, we can move on to what color red and white make. The answer is pink. Get the shade of pink you are looking for by adding a lesser or greater quantity of white paint to red.

So what happens if you shine only red light onto a blue object? All of that red light gets absorbed and the blue object will seem to be dark, almost black. If you now shine a blue light onto that blue object all the blue can reflect off of that “blue mirror” and you will see the colors again!

Colour of objects The colours we see are the wavelengths that are reflected or transmitted. For example, a red shirt looks red because the dye molecules in the fabric have absorbed the wavelengths of light from the violet/blue end of the spectrum. White objects appear white because they reflect all colours.

Even while mixing orange with white, which is a representation of light in pigment colorization, it intensifies the orange’s tint to be lighter, and a bit paler in intensity. Just add more yellow to the orange mix (secondary colour), and it will “brighten” up to a brighter orange.

You can see that blue is the complement of orange. So if you’re trying to tone down the appearance of orange tones in your cabinets, you’re going to want to avoid decorating with blue.

As mentioned, when mixing pigments together, blue can be made by mixing cyan and magenta together.

To make a blue food dye, slice up red cabbage leaves and boil for 10-15 minutes. Strain out the cabbage, reduce the liquid until it is thick and syrupy (the cooking liquid from a whole cabbage will reduce to about a quarter of a cup. Now you have an intensely purple syrup.

Light blue is a pale shade of blue. The light blue hex color code is #ADD8E6. Wondering how to make light blue? Simply stirring some white paint into a blue base will create light blue’s soft hue.

Squeeze a pea-sized amount of yellow near the first color you squeezed. Dip your paintbrush into the yellow to just lightly add it to the tip of your brush. Mix it in with the first color you squeezed out. You should have a slightly lighter hue of the original color.

To darken a color, add black (or a darker shade of your color). To lighten a color, start with white paint and mix in small amounts of your color. When mixing dark/light paints, you always want to start with the lighter color and add the darker color in small amounts.

Mixing Sky Blue with Cobalt Blue Cobalt Blue produces a decent Sky Blue by just adding white to it. In the first three steps are variations of just adding white in various increments. Then I added Quinacridone Magenta, but it was too much.

Make navy blue by mixing a little black or orange into a pure blue a little at a time. Keep a sample image of the desired navy blue tint handy and scrap paper for testing your freshly mixed paint, so you can tell when your blend is near a navy hue.

How do you make midnight blue? Simply mix a small amount of black paint into a blue base. There’s no exact ratio for how much black paint to add, just keep mixing until you reach midnight blue’s deep hue.
