Just off the coast of Le Morne, on the island’s southwest, Mauritius offers a spectacular illusion. Sand and silt on the ocean floor run off in a way that makes it look like they’re pouring down a waterfall — or like the entire island is being sucked down a vast drain.

And you would be understandably mistaken to think that this might be what awaits you should you go swimming near this underwater waterfall in the Republic of Mauritius. Stunning and dangerous, this underwater waterfall seems to be both beautiful and deadly.

But how can there be waterfalls in the ocean? It’s because cold water is denser than warm water, and in the Denmark Strait, southward-flowing frigid water from the Nordic Seas meets warmer water from the Irminger Sea.

The world’s biggest underwater waterfall is located in the Denmark Strait between Greenland and Iceland. Arctic water from the Greenland Sea drops precipitously into the depths of the (slightly less chilly) Irminger Sea.

While it is neither the highest nor the widest waterfall in the world, the Victoria Falls are classified as the largest, based on its combined width of 1,708 metres (5,604 ft) and height of 108 metres (354 ft), resulting in the world’s largest sheet of falling water.
