THF is often used in polymer science. For example, it can be used to dissolve polymers prior to determining their molecular mass using gel permeation chromatography. THF dissolves PVC as well, and thus it is the main ingredient in PVC adhesives.

If the atom simply pulls the electrons towards itself and it forms a polar covalent bond. Thus, the disparate sharing of electrons results in the bond possessing a partial positive and negative end….Polar Vs. Non-polar:

A covalent bond that has an unequal sharing of electrons, as in part (b) of Figure 4.4. 1, is called a polar covalent bond. A covalent bond that has an equal sharing of electrons (part (a) of Figure 4.4. 1) is called a nonpolar covalent bond.

The terms “polar” and “nonpolar” usually refer to covalent bonds. To determine the polarity of a covalent bond using numerical means, find the difference between the electronegativity of the atoms; if the result is between 0.4 and 1.7, then, generally, the bond is polar covalent.

THF is widely used as a solvent for special resins such as photosensitive resins, because even at room temperature it can dissolve various resins, and it is miscible with water and most organic solvents. In, addition, it is used as a solvent for Grignard and Wittig reactions.

The Kind of Plastic If a particular plastic bears a close enough similarity to acetone, the acetone will dissolve or at least affect its surface, softening, smearing or even dissolving the plastic. Other plastics, dissimilar to acetone, will remain unaffected by the solvent.

It will permeate most plastics. It ‘dissolves’ in the plastic and evaporates from the other side.
