We succeeded – today, 99% of Starbucks is ethically sourced – but we have not rested.

Starbucks uses more than 8,000 paper cups a minute, which adds up to more than four billion a year. 1.6 million trees are harvested every year for all of those single-use cups. Since these cups are lined with plastic, they are not really recyclable ─ only four U.S. cities even accept Starbucks paper cups for recycling.

Color. The colors used in Starbucks’ logo include deep green and white. The green stands as the background color, while the white is used for the main siren symbol. In the design world, green is a color that represents healing, nature, and protection.

In 2020 Starbucks committed to a resource-positive future, formalizing environmental goals to cut its carbon, water, and waste footprints by half. As a progression against those goals, the company commits to Carbon Neutral Green Coffee and to conserve water usage in green coffee processing by 50%, both by 2030.

The coffee giant has drawn fire in the past from environmental activists for the roughly 6 billion cups it uses every year. Last year, it pledged to phase out plastic straws from all of its stores by 2020.

The average cup of coffee contains about 18g of green coffee, so 1 kg of it can make 56 espressos. Just one espresso has an average carbon footprint of about 0.28 kg, but it could be as little as 0.06 kg if grown sustainably.

Traditional paper coffee cups are not recyclable or compostable because they are coated with a plastic lining — but Starbucks’ new cup is coated with a compostable lining, meaning it can be either composted or recycled with single-stream recycling.

The cup, being tested in select stores for a limited time, features an innovative cup liner, called BioPBS™, which makes the cup certified compostable and recyclable. Customers will not see any noticeable difference from the current cup as Starbucks aims to create a seamless customer experience with the new cup.

And while technically, Starbucks’ cups can be recycled under the right circumstances, they usually are not. Most facilities don’t recycle paper cups because to do so, they would have to separate the cups’ plastic lining from the paper. Many recyclers find that process to be more trouble than it’s worth.

Recycle empty paper cups in your blue cart or community recycling depot, including: Coffee cups and sleeves (example: Tim Hortons, McDonalds) Fast food drink cups.

One way in which McDonald’s is trying to reduce their waste is by implementing an on-site incinerator at some Midwest locations. While this reduces the weight and volume of the waste, helping reduce both city budgets and McDonald’s cost of hauling, it is still disposal.

McDonald’s customers are using plastic coffee lids to avoid the fast food chain’s new paper straws. Earlier this month, customers took to Twitter complaining that the company’s paper straws are ruining their drinks, specifically milkshakes.

Aimed at reducing reliance on single-use packaging, McDonald’s will test a reusable cup program for hot beverages beginning in 2021 (via McDonald’s). By shifting toward reusable coffee cups, McDonald’s could eliminate one of their largest sources of non-recyclable waste.

McDonald’s Corp. confirmed that it is transitioning from polystyrene beverage cups to a fiber-based paper cup for its McCafé hot drinks in a multiyear rollout at its more than 14,000 restaurants in the United States.

Removal of plastics Currently, 78% of packaging used by McDonald’s globally is made from fibre. The new fibre lids are made from 100% certified sustainable sources and recyclable materials.

The sheer amount of food McDonald’s sells produce a staggering amount of waste. To be precise, McDonald’s produces 1.5 millions tons of waste annually. Given this, many believe the company still has a long way to go.
