I really don’t think these are a great quality paint but with some tweaking they suffice to give colors I need to work on my small art oil projects. You can’t use acrylic over oils so keep that in mind. I even used them on the tiles I paint on and they work great!

Here’s a good starting list of oil paint colors:

• Alizarin crimson.
• Cadmium red or Cadmium red light.
• Burnt Sienna or transparent oxide brown.
• Raw umber.
• Yellow ochre.
• Cadmium yellow or lemon yellow.
• Titanium white.
• Greens can be mixed from blues and yellows, but permanent green light, sap green are helpful for landscapes.

Pebeo could be classed as a student grade paint. They do not use single pigments in their colours, but rather a mix of hues and imitation colours. This means that you are more limited when it comes to creating vibrant colour mixes. The lightfast ratings of Pebeo aren’t great.

Colours for oil painting: Choose pigments to create hues. To create the widest range of hues with the fewest colours, you will need six different pigments. These six colours are the primary colours and a warm or cool version of each.

The primary colors are red, yellow, and blue. Here are the colors you’ll find in the Essential Palette set: Cadmium Yellow Hue. Cadmium Yellow Deep Hue.

When you are deciding how to choose oil colors, the main differences between artist and student grade paints are: Pigment strength and coverage (and amount of fillers). Artist grade oil paint can have twice the amount of pigment in the same volume of paint compared to a student grade. Student grades have more fillers.

1. Always Paint from Dark to Light. A common strategy for approaching a painting, is to begin with the darkest darks, and gradually progress through the midtones to the lights, adding your highlights right at the end.
