The revised Army Regulation 530-1, “Operations Security,” provides updated definitions; aligns the Army’s policies, terms and doctrine with the Defense Department; and brings Army Contractors into the fold while addressing the role Army Family Members have in OPSEC.

(2) Deception in Support of Operations Security (DISO). DISO is a MILDEC activity that protects friendly operations, personnel, programs, equipment, and other assets against foreign intelligence and security services (FISS) collection.

A good reference point is the six principles of military deception as defined by Joint Publication (JP) 3-58: focus, integration, timeliness, security, objective, and centralized control.

MISO is the dissemination of information to foreign audiences in support of U.S. policy and national objectives. Military information support operations support national security objectives at the tactical, operational and strategic levels of operations.

Military deception (MILDEC) is planned, trained, and conducted to support military campaigns and major operations. MILDEC activities are planned and executed to cause adversaries to take actions or inactions that are favorable to the commander’s objectives. Army forces do not unilaterally conduct MILDEC.

The OPSEC process is most effective when fully integrated into all planning and operational processes. The OPSEC process involves five steps: (1) identification of critical information, (2) analysis of threats, (3) analysis of vulnerabilities, (4) assessment of risk, and (5) application of appropriate countermeasures.

These OPSEC officers perform a vital role in building an effective program, which helps protect the unit’s critical and sensitive information; and trains, informs and advises unit personnel on compliance with Army policies and procedures.
