What advances in farming occurred during the Song Dynasty? New irrigation techniques and irrigation systems. Farms were more productive, with the discoveryof a new type of fast-ripening rice. Also they grew new crops like cotton and tea.

The Song government was the first in world history to issue banknotes or true paper money nationally and the first Chinese government to establish a permanent standing navy. This dynasty also saw the first known use of gunpowder, as well as the first discernment of true north using a compass.

Technological advancements were significant and helped change China and the world. Technological advancements, domestic and international trade, and effective government influenced and advanced Chinese society, resulting in a population explosion during the Song dynasty.

The Song dynasty came to an end when they allied with the Mongols against their longtime enemies, the Jin. The Mongols helped them to conquer the Jin, but then turned on the Song. The leader of the Mongols, Kublai Khan, conquered all of China and began his own dynasty, the Yuan dynasty.

The Song dynasty (960-1279) follows the Tang (618-906) and the two together constitute what is often called “China’s Golden Age.” The use of paper money, the introduction of tea drinking, and the inventions of gunpowder, the compass, and printing all occur under the Song.

Kublai Khan was the grandson of Genghis Khan and the founder of the Yuan Dynasty in 13th-century China. He was the first Mongol to rule over China when he conquered the Song Dynasty of southern China in 1279.

After becoming emperor, Kublai banned granting the titles of and tithes to Han Chinese warlords. Chagatayid Khan Alghu, who had been appointed by Ariq Böke, declared his allegiance to Kublai and defeated a punitive expedition sent by Ariq Böke in 1262.

Marco Polo was not the first European to travel to Asia. Marco Polo may be the most storied Far East traveler, but he certainly was not the first. Polo would later mention the fictional monarch in his book, and even described him as having fought a great battle against the Mongol ruler Genghis Kahn.

It has been said that Marco Polo did not really go to China; that he merely cobbled together his information about it from journeys to the Black Sea, Constantinople and Persia and from talking to merchants and reading now-lost Persian books.

In his early days as a tax collector, Ahmad meets Oksana at a brothel, neither of the two knowing that they are biological mother and son. Ahmad realizes that Oksana, the woman he had just had sex with, is his biological mother, leading him to strangle her to death.

Not a lot is known about Marco Polo after his return to Venice in 1295. It is posited that he returned to the family merchant business, but it is known that he married and had three daughters: Moretta, Fantina, and Bellela. He lived to be 70 years old.

Polo traveled extensively with his family, journeying from Europe to Asia from 1271 to 1295 and remaining in China for 17 of those years. Around 1292, he left China, acting as escort along the way to a Mongol princess who was being sent to Persia.

Bayan of the Baarin (Mongolian: Баян; 1236 – January 11, 1295), or Boyan (Chinese: 伯顔; pinyin: Bóyán), was a Mongol general. He was known to Marco Polo as “Bayan Hundred Eyes” (probably from a confusion with Chinese: 百眼; pinyin: Bǎiyǎn).

Five years after Kaidu’s death, Khutulun died under unknown circumstances, at the age of forty-six. Afterwards, the Mongol Empire, particularly the more nomadic factions, began to crumble. Khutulun could be considered one of the last great nomadic warrior princesses. After her death, she was forgotten for centuries.

During his enslavement, Marco Polo is also trained in martial arts by a blind Taoist monk, Hundred Eyes (Tom Wu). Hundred Eyes is a master in the Wu Tang sword style and the kung fu master and takes it upon himself to mentor Marco Polo. Marco Polo is no amateur production.
