Portuguese and Brazilians still speak the same language, but it has evolved in slightly different ways over the years due to cultural and historical differences.

In an attempt to stymie its rival, Spain sought support from the pope, Spanish-born Alexander VI. He created a line of demarcation to divide the nations’ claims as part of the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494. That miraculous and fateful decision is why Brazilians speak Portuguese.

Today, there are nearly 7,000 people of Portuguese descent in Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Lake, Brevard, Volusia and Polk counties. Since 1990, the population has increased 60 percent, putting the Orlando area right behind the Portuguese communities in Miami-Fort Lauderdale and Tampa-St. Petersburg.

Provincetown has a large Portuguese community, one with deep ties to the town’s fishing industry. The first Portuguese immigrants were sailors, and within decades, they’d come to dominate the fishing industry.
