Pharaonic symbols were numerous in the life of ancient Egyptians and varied in their symbols, rituals, and use. Scarabs were popular amulets and impression seals in ancient Egypt. They survive in large numbers and, through their inscriptions and typology, they are an important source of information for archaeologists and historians of the ancient world. They also represent a significant body of ancient art.

Ra represented the rising sun and Atum the setting sun. As Re-Atum, he would die at dusk and pass through the underworld overnight, like the sun setting on the horizon and disappearing.
