Personal responsibility or Individual Responsibility is the idea that human beings choose, instigate, or otherwise cause their own actions. Personal responsibility can be contrasted to the idea that human actions are caused by conditions beyond the agent’s control.

If you’re irresponsible, you’re careless about the consequences of your actions. You can’t really rely on irresponsible people. Being irresponsible is the opposite of being responsible and careful — you do what you like and don’t care what happens afterward.

In psychotherapy, this is often labeled as Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NARC). One of the main characteristics is the unwillingness of them to see the part they play in conflict or take responsibility for their actions. Most of us know someone like this or perhaps have done this ourselves.

Narcissists will gladly be responsible for the things they deem worthy, especially when it provides an opportunity to be the center of attention. However, when others place responsibility on the narcissist, the narcissist sees this as an attempt to control them.

A narcissist will demand something and then the next moment may demand the exact opposite be done for him. People around narcissists become exhausted from all the effort they put out trying to accommodate the narcissist’s wishes. Narcissists are liars. Lying is just one of those traits that cannot be pulled out of their personality. Lying is just one of the things that they do to manipulate and control others. Since narcissists are trying to control everything in their lives, they are capable and likely to lie about everything in their lives.

People generally say, “That is not true,” or “That is false,” in response to someone lying. However, gaslighters/narcissists are pathological liars. Their behavior needs to be called out directly — again, a simple “You are lying,” and then stating the facts is sufficient.
