On February 19, 2002, Thumbelina was re-released on VHS and DVD; licensed by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. The movie was available to view on Disney+ when it launched in November 2019 after Disney bought 20th Century Fox (which licensed the film’s distribution rights from Warner Bros.

In November 2017, the British newspaper The Telegraph reported that the mother of a schoolboy who had brought home a copy of the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty was calling for the text to be banned. The reason she gave was that the heroine could not have consented to the kiss that released her from her enchanted sleep.

A mother has called for schools to ban the classic fairy tale Sleeping Beauty due to issues pertaining to “sexual behaviour and consent.” This comes during the ongoing wake of Hollywood’s many ongoing sexual harassment and assault scandals as well as the #MeToo campaign.

A mother has demanded her six-year-old son’s school bans Sleeping Beauty because the princess does not give consent to be kissed. Sarah Hall, from Northumberland Park, North Shields in the UK, claimed the fairytale promotes an “inappropriate sexual” message to young children, the Daily Mail reported.

In both Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, the princesses are unable to give consent due to their lack of consciousness as their princes kiss them in order to “save” them from their slumber (see images above). Specifically, Sleeping Beauty has a long history and even more current depiction of rape within the story.

The controversy arose from a Disneyland review on the website SFGate, in which the reviewers discuss the recently revamped ride Snow White’s Enchanted Wish. Mimicking the animated classic, the ride ends with the animatronic princess being kissed by her prince as she sleeps to awake her from her poisoned slumber.
