Brian’s Winter Timeline

In Chapter 16, Brian hunts a foolbird near the lake. When he gets his kill, he goes to the lake to rinse the blood from his hands. As he is doing this, a moose, a large North American animal with antlers, charges and attacks him twice. Brian is badly injured, but stays mentally strong and heads back to his camp.

At the end of Hatchet, thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson, who has been trapped in the Canadian wilderness after a plane accident, decides to dive for a “survival pack” from the submerged aircraft. He almost drowns trying to tear the plane open. He recovers, among other things, an emergency transmitter.

Brian realized he was dreaming and the moose was still on top of him. Then Brian moved away from under the moose. He got up and looked at the moose, and he decided to cut up the moose, for the meat. Finally at midnight, he stopped cutting up the meat and went to his shelter and fell asleep.

Chapter Eleven: Brian knew it was only going to get colder, so he started to make a jacket out of moose hide. Brian was also making a pair of mittens out of rabbit skin. Brian still had enough food to last him three months and had it stored safely so he wouldn’t encounter the bear again.

In chapter 8, still concerned about his clothing situation, Brian makes sleeves for his vest. Brian then spends a day making boots to fit over his quickly disintegrating tennis shoes. The next morning, when he wakes, Brian discovers that it has snowed. The woods look completely different in the snow.

The war bow required a great deal of strength to shoot; the string slapped Brian’s arm when shot and the feathers of the arrow cut the top of his hand as they passed over it. It took Brian too long to get the war bow ready to defend himself in an emergency.

What did Brian give thanks for? Brian gives thanks for escaping from the plane alive, for being able to live and learn and know things, for being able to hunt, for the animals’ lives that had been spent to keep him fed, his shelter and knife.

In chapter 12, Brian realizes it is after Thanksgiving and he decides to make a Thanksgiving feast for himself. Brian picks some small red berries and boils them into a sauce, serving them with a moose roast. During his meal, Brian stops to give thanks for all he has that has helped him to…

But it rained steadily for five days and while it rained it turned colder, so that Page 64 by the fifth day Brian felt as if he were freezing.

Why do you think Brian decided to prepare a Thanksgiving meal? What did he have to be gateful for? To remind him of his days in New York. He was thankful for all the animals, surviving the plane crash and the bear attack.

What happened during Brian’s car ride with his mother from the city to meet the plane? Brian’s mother tried to get him to talk about what was wrong.

Looking out over the lake, Brian spots the tail of the Cessna plane sticking out of the water. He thinks of the pilot, dead in the plane, and a huge weighty sadness sweeps over him.
