Different Types of Flanges and Their Uses

ANSI Flanges are manufactured based on standards developed by organizations and ASME Flanges are based on codes and standards for mechanical devices. The ANSI Flanges are designed based on approx. 9500 standards whereas ASME Flanges manufactured on 600 codes and standards for different mechanical devices.

What is ANSI? ANSI B16. 5 -1996 is the official standard for ANSI Class Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings, applied specifically to those made from cast or forged materials, as well as blind flanges and some reducing flanges crafted in cast, forged, or plate.

Class 125 and Class 250 are cast iron flanges and flanged fittings while Class 150 and Class 300 are ductile iron, steel or stainless steel. 1 Class 125 flanges are made from cast iron, ANSI/ASME B16. 5 Class 150 can be made from steel or stainless and ANSI/ASME B16. 42 Class 150 is made from ductile iron.

ANSI Class 150 establishes measures for pipe sizes. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Class 150 is a system of dimensional standards for weld neck, threaded, slip-on, lap joint, socket weld and blind flanges. Dimensions for facing, bolts and studs are also included in ANSI Class 150.

The ASME B16. 34 specification covers pressure and temperature ratings for forgings, castings, plate, bar, and tubular products. 34 charts show the max allowed pressure for a material depending on the product rating and the process temperature (the higher the temperature, the lower the pressure at a given rating).

ANSI establishes and accredits performance and quality standards for products and services in a wide variety of sectors, while ASME is primarily focused on boilers and pressure vessels.

API 570 Piping Inspector Certification

1. Applicants with no formal education can apply to sit for the exam after acquiring 5 years of relevant industry experience.
2. An applicant with a high school diploma or equivalent can apply after acquiring 3 years of relevant industry experience.

What are the differences between them? API 6FA is fire test for API 6A and API 6D valves, while API 6FD is for check valves. Regarding API 607, it is for quarter-turn valves and valves with soft seats. The fire test ensures that the valve has minimal leakage when fire takes place.

API Standard 600, from the American Petroleum Institute, describes the criteria for valve design/construction and the material/trim designations for steel gate valves. The most recent version of this standard was published in January 2015, effective as of July 15, 2015.

API 608 provides for the inspection, inspection and pressure testing of ball valves in accordance with API 598” inspection and testing of valves”. API 6D provides more detailed requirements for the inspection and testing of pipeline valves, which are more demanding than ASME B16.

The API 6D is the specification for Pipeline Valves. It is the primary standard based on the ISO 14313 that specifies the requirements of valves and offers suggestions for the design, manufacture, inspecting, and notation of check, ball, plug, and gate valves in pipework systems.
