Our culture shapes the way we work and play, and it makes a difference in how we view ourselves and others. It affects our values—what we consider right and wrong. This is how the society we live in influences our choices. But our choices can also influence others and ultimately help shape our society.

• Gothic Lolita. Gothic Lolita is a style that combines Japanese Lolita with western gothic influences.

• Hipsters.
• Soft Grunge.

Try asking one of Gen Z’ers and they’ll tell you that TikTok is a completely new subculture. TikTok is one of the fastest growing social media platforms in the world which presents an alternative version of online sharing. It allows users to create short videos with music, filters, and some other features.

An interesting subculture that has emerged on TikTok is that of “e-girls”. E-girls are “cool” young people presenting their image, often from their homes, sporting 90’s style make-up, hairstyles, and attire.

Amid chaos and upheaval, the scene revival is going strong. Paramore’s Hayley Williams released her first solo album earlier this year, while era-defining My Chemical Romance were set for a 2020 reunion tour (although that has since been pushed back a year due to said world chaos).

Emo is still a thing, and those bands still exist. Waterparks and Twenty One Pilots are the newest popular bands among emos. By the way, some bands are popular among emos, but that doesn’t make the bands “emo.” My Chemical Romance can be considered emo because they mix emo with punk. Paramore however is fully pop-punk.

Short answer: Yes and no. I wouldn’t say it’s entirely dead, it’s just not what it used to be. Long answer: What emo was in it’s early years has long died down, but you can still see the influence of old school emo bands like Sunny Day Real Estate and Jawbreaker in newer bands such as Modern Baseball and Citizen.

Despite all of the negative attitudes surrounding the emo culture and style, it still thrives today. The term “emo” has different meanings for different people, but most things stay the same.

People usually listen to music that speaks to them, makes sense to them, and identifies with them. If you follow this logic, then someone obsessed with “emo” music probably has some lurking issues. This could explain why emos are often associated with self-harm, loneliness, and depression.

There are still goths, not only adults but also people between 13 and 17. There’s always newer people, usually drove into thanks to the music. Sometimes they organize Goth parties and they gather. I’ve participated in many of them, but mostly between 2006 and 2014.

In due time, especially around the 90s, emo replaced goth, since people thought newer, more emotional, music was the new flame. Now it’s making a “comeback” because again, the subculture’s aesthetic and fashion statements are being used for businesses and companies.
