The nine regions are smaller than the four abdominopelvic quadrants and include the right hypochondriac, right lumbar, right illiac, epigastric, umbilical, hypogastric (or pubic), left hypochondriac, left lumbar, and left illiac divisions. The perineum is sometimes considered to be the tenth division.

The human body is roughly apportionable into five big regions: head, neck, torso, upper extremity and lower extremity.

The nine divisions are part of parasagittal and two transverse planes of body-centered around the navel. These divisions are important anatomically to determine the location of the organ within the abdomen and pelvic area.

Midsagittal plane—A vertical cut down the exact center line of the specimen that separates the left half from the right half. Parasagittal plane—A vertical cut that is off-center that separates the left of the specimen from the right in unequal portions.

Etymology. The term is derived from Latin corona (‘garland, crown’), from Ancient Greek κορώνη (korōnē, ‘garland, wreath’). The coronal plane is so-called because it lies in the direction of Coronal suture.

Sagittal Plane: A Sagittal Plane divides the body into right/left parts [head, neck, trunk, tail].

Axes of movement

• Frontal axis – this line runs from left to right through the centre of the body.
• Sagittal (also known as the antero-posterior) axis – this line runs from front to back through the centre of the body.
• Vertical axis – this line runs from top to bottom through the centre of the body.

Anterior and Posterior Anterior refers to the ‘front’, and posterior refers to the ‘back’.

A dorsal fin is a fin located on the back of most marine and freshwater vertebrates within various taxa of the animal kingdom.

Dorsal — directed toward the back [for: head, neck, trunk & tail]; also applied to manus & pes. Ventral — directed toward the belly [for: head, neck, trunk & tail].

Anterior (or ventral) Describes the front or direction toward the front of the body. The toes are anterior to the foot. Posterior (or dorsal) Describes the back or direction toward the back of the body.

anterior/posterior: Their reference is to the long axis of the body. “ante-” as in “antenatal” and “antebellum” means “before” -> before the center of the body -> “toward the front side.” Posterior is even easier to remember, because we already use that term to mean “backside.”

8. Why are posterior and dorsal only synonymous with humans? -The vertebral axis is only one direction, and our bodies have two additional directions: front to back, and side to side. Posterior and dorsal ultiamtely mean the same thing, (Posterior: Toward the rear , Dorsal: In humans, toward the back of the torso.)

The dorsal body cavity is located along the dorsal (posterior) surface of the human body, where it is subdivided into the cranial cavity housing the brain and the spinal cavity housing the spinal cord.
