A United States Geological Survey publication describes the Mid-Atlantic Region as all of Maryland, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, along with the parts of New Jersey, New York, and North Carolina that drain into the Delaware and Chesapeake Bays and the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds.

The frost free growing season ranges from 120 to 180 days with the last frost dates ranging from April end (along the coast) to early June (in the mountains) and the first frost dates starting as early as September until the end of October.

The climate of New England varies greatly across its 500-mile (800 km) span from northern Maine to southern Connecticut: Summers can occasionally be hot and humid, with high temperatures in the lower Connecticut Valley of Massachusetts and northern Connecticut between 90 and 100 °F (32 and 38 °C).

The New England colonies had very harsh winters and mild summers. This made the growing season only about five months long. Because the soil was rocky and the climate was often harsh, colonists in New England only farmed enough to feed their families. Some of these crops included corn, beans, and squash.

The Middle colonies spanned the Mid-Atlantic region of America and were temperate in climate, with warm summers and cold winters. Climate and land were ideal for agriculture. These colonies were known as the “breadbasket” because of the large amounts of barley, wheat, oats, and rye that were grown here.

The location along the Atlantic Coast also allowed people in the Mid-Atlantic colonies to make a living through fishing. Those who did not make a living by farming or fishing were able to find work as either skilled or unskilled workers.

The Mid-Atlantic Colonies have a fantastic geography and climate that is easy to adapt to. This place is so splendid that it has a moderate climate and mild winters each year. In this colonial region, you won’t have to worry about the freezing cold winters or blazing hot summers.

Four Mid-Atlantic states—Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania—along with the District of Columbia make up the REL Mid-Atlantic region. Geographically, the region includes heavily populated and industrialized areas around cities such as Baltimore, Philadelphia, and the District of Columbia.

Northeastern United States

The population in the Mid-Atlantic region increased 0.3 percent from 2017 to 2018, or by 92,550, to 30.84 million (U.S. Census Bureau population estimates as of July 1).

The 11 states that make up the US Northeast Region are Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont. Washington D.C., which is not a US state, is also considered part of the Northeast region.
