Contrary to popular belief, linguists agree that spoken Japanese is relatively easy to master compared with other languages, partly because it has only five vowels and 13 consonants. On the other hand, English has 12 vowels and 24 consonants. It is Japanese in its written form that presents the most difficulties.

If you’re interested in animé, J-pop, and Japanese food and culture, then Japanese would be a good choice for you. On the other hand, for those interested in Chinese history and how it shaped many other Asian cultures, learning Chinese would be a great way to gain more insight.

It takes 3 months (90 days) to learn enough Korean to have a 3-minute conversation in Korean if you study for 7-10 hours per week. After 1 year of studying at this pace, you can become conversationally fluent.

Learning Korean takes a lot of time and a lot of studying, and pronunciation is not so easy. You may be able to learn a lot of grammar and vocab but you won’t learn enough of it and you definitely won’t be fluid in only 3 months. Especially if you haven’t learned any other languages.

You can teach yourself Hangul (the Korean alphabet); it took me about three days of minimal effort, and many people master it faster than that. There are grammar books and dictionaries online, YouTube videos, etc. If you are good at self-study, learning Korean that way is no different from learning any other language.

The short answer: Korean is not too difficult. But nor is Korean “easy”. On a difficulty scale, I’d say the difficulty of Korean is 4/5 or “Moderately Difficult” — harder to get to fluency for an English speaker than French or German, but easier than Chinese or Arabic.

The grammar of both of these languages is pretty much identical. The Korean alphabet is much easier than Japanese, but the various levels of speach and address in Korean make it more challenging.
