Scientific racism of the late 19th and early 20th centuries divided humans into three races based on “common physical characteristics”: Caucasoid, Mongoloid, and Negroid. The people of India are predominantly Caucasoid.

American Indians – Native Americans The term “Indian,” in reference to the original inhabitants of the American continent, is said to derive from Christopher Columbus, a 15th century boat-person. Some say he used the term because he was convinced he had arrived in “the Indies” (Asia), his intended destination.

Ethnicity is a broader term than race. The term is used to categorize groups of people according to their cultural expression and identification. Commonalities such as racial, national, tribal, religious, linguistic, or cultural origin may be used to describe someone’s ethnicity.

For example, the U.S. Census defines race as “a person’s self-identification with one or more social groups.” These personal identifiers are the words you most often see when you’re completing official paperwork and are asked to check the box of your respective race.

An Arab can be defined as a member of a Semitic people, inhabiting much of the Middle East and North Africa. The ties that bind Arabs are ethnic, linguistic, cultural, historical, nationalist, geographical, political, often also relating to religion and to cultural identity.

Identity. Cubans are far more likely than other Hispanics to identify themselves as white when asked about their race. In the 2004 Census data, about 86% of Cubans said they were white, compared with 60% among Mexicans, 53% among other Central and South Americans and 50% among Puerto Ricans.

The vast majority of Jamaicans are of African descent, with minorities of Europeans, East Indians, Chinese, Middle Eastern and others or mixed ancestry.
