An information system is described as having five components.

Information system, an integrated set of components for collecting, storing, and processing data and for providing information, knowledge, and digital products.

Information Systems is an academic study of systems with a specific reference to information and the complementary networks of hardware and software that people and organizations use to collect, filter, process, create and also distribute data. Information systems help to control the performance of business processes.

• Computer hardware. This is the physical technology that works with information.
• Computer software. The hardware needs to know what to do, and that is the role of software.
• Telecommunications.
• Databases and data warehouses.
• Human resources and procedures.

In a sociotechnical perspective, information systems are composed by four components: task, people, structure (or roles), and technology.

• The six components of an information system are as follows:
• Software. •
• Hardware. The hardware is the physical components of the information system and it is used to store the data and provides an interface to perform operations like insert and delete of information from the system.
• Data. •
• People. •
• Procedures: •
• Networks.

And they are all right, at least in part: information systems are made up of different components that work together to provide value to an organization. The first way I describe information systems to students is to tell them that they are made up of five components: hardware, software, data, people, and process.

Information systems are made up of five different functions: input, storage, processing, output and feedback loop.

Accounting information systems generally consist of six primary components: people, procedures and instructions, data, software, information technology infrastructure, and internal controls. Below is a breakdown of each component in detail.

Computers, keyboards, disk drives, iPads, and flash drives are all examples of information systems hardware. We will spend some time going over these components and how they all work together in chapter 2.

It includes all the parts inside the computer case such as the CPU, hard disk drive, graphic cards, sound cards, RAM, power supply unit, motherboard, etc. Computer hardware is what you can physically touch.

Characteristics of Information

• Availability/accessibility. Information should be easy to obtain or access.
• Accuracy. Information needs to be accurate enough for the use to which it is going to be put.
• Reliability or objectivity.
• Relevance/appropriateness.
• Completeness.
• Level of detail/conciseness.
• Presentation.
• Timing.

Explanation: The information should be counted on to be trustworthy. It should be accurate, consistent with facts and verifiable. Inadequate or incorrect information generally leads to decisions of poor quality.

The main objective of information systems is helping decision makers by providing accurate and time based information helping them in making the right decisions in turbulent environment. Management Information Systems helps in solving both structured and unstructured problem environments.
