A global education is one that incorporates learning about the cultures, geographies, histories, and current issues of all the world’s regions. Global education develops students’ skills to engage with their global peers and highlights actions students can take as citizens of the world.

Curriculum is defined: planned learning experiences with intended outcomes while recognizing the importance of possible unintended outcomes. There are three types of curriculum: (1) explicit (stated curriculum), (2) hidden (unofficial curriculum), and (3) absent or null ( excluded curriculum).

Global education aims at opening a global dimension and a holistic perspective in education in order to help people understand the complex realities and processes of today’s world and develop values, attitudes, knowledge and skills that will enable them to face the challenges of an interconnected world.

Global learning is the process of diverse people collaboratively analyzing and addressing complex problems that transcend borders.

Turn your city into your curriculum. Bring in local and global newspapers and encourage students to find parallels. Take advantage of different local cultures and cultural experiences to immerse students in. Then, ask them to think beyond the local to uncover how cultures in other countries are affected.

When appropriate, assignments that involve engagement in the school and local communities are ways to encourage authentic real-world interactions beyond the classroom. Consider online interactions through project-based learning with peers in other countries as well group assignments (either face-to-face or online).

The goal of education in the 21st century is the mastery of information, embedded knowledge and understanding and the advanced use of technology in society. Collaboration creates an opportunity for learners to share their understandings with others and to have others do the same with them.

These 21st-century skills are more important to students now than ever before. They not only provide a framework for successful learning in the classroom, but ensure students can thrive in a world where change is constant and learning never stops. And they are also tremendously important for our nation’s well being.
