You should already know the scales of C, D, G and F major which are covered in Grade One Music Theory. In Grade Two ABRSM there are three new major scales which you need to know: A, Bb and Eb major.

The primary step in learning to sing by the use of shape notes is learning the So-Fa syllables. These syllables are Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So-La-Ti-Do. The old-timers put the syllables So and Fa together for a shortened way of describing them.

Sol-fa meaning

• To use the sol-fa syllables or sing using these syllables.
• The syllables do (formerly ut), re, mi, fa, sol (or so), la, ti (or si), do (or ut), used to represent the tones of a scale, regardless of its key.
• The use of these syllables, as in vocal exercises; solfeggio.

The so-fa names are so-fa syllable written as do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, Do. These so-fa names are arranged in ascending or descending order. While thecorresponding numbers are equivalent, numbers of both so-fa names and pitch names. A.

Improve the quality of vocal pitching Solfa enables singers to better learn pitch relationships, or the spaces between the notes of a scale. The consistent use of Solfa syllables facilitates memorization and helps the mind to recall the exact distance between intervals with greater ease.

Do

The syllables for major are DO, RE, MI, FA, SO, LA , TI, DO. (That’s pronounced doh, ray, mee, fa, so, la, tee, doh.) So, for example in the key of C major, G is the 5th degree (C, D, E, F, G…); therefore the correct solfege syllable is SO.

C major (or the key of C) is a major scale based on C, with the pitches C, D, E, F, G, A, and B. C major is one of the most common key signatures used in music. Its key signature has no flats and no sharps. On the piano, the C major scale can be played by playing only the white keys starting on C.

Its key signature has one flat: B♭. Its relative minor is D minor and its parallel minor is F minor. F major is the home key of the English horn, the basset horn, the horn in F, the trumpet in F and the bass Wagner tuba….F major.

F-sharp major

The triad chords in the key of F major are F major, G minor, A minor, Bb major, C major, D minor, and E diminished. You can add sevenths to these chords, either major seventh or dominant seventh, depending on the chord.

In this case, the key is F. This is something you should memorize. You can also think of the flat furthest to the right as the syllable “fa”. If you think this way, then you can always just count down from that flat to find “do”.

Key signature, in musical notation, the arrangement of sharp or flat signs on particular lines and spaces of a musical staff to indicate that the corresponding notes, in every octave, are to be consistently raised (by sharps) or lowered (by flats) from their natural pitches.

G major (or the key of G) is a major scale based on G, with the pitches G, A, B, C, D, E, and F♯. Its key signature has one sharp, F♯. Its relative minor is E minor and its parallel minor is G minor.

The easiest way to figure out the key of a song is by using its key signature. The number of sharps/flats in the key signature tell you the key of the song. A key signature with no sharps or flats is the key of C (or A minor).

1 is in G-sharp major, although the key signature has four sharps….G-sharp major.

You can also look to the melody of a song and notice where it ends. Melodies typically resolve to the tonic note of the key. Again, if a song’s melody notes all fit within C major/A minor and the final melody note is C, it’s in C major. If it ends on A, it’s in A minor.

The 12 Keys of Music There are 12 notes on the piano keyboard: A, A#/B♭, B, C, C#/D♭, D, D#/E♭, E, F, F#/G♭, G, G#/A♭.

More often then not, the first and/or last chord of a song indicates the key. If the first and last chords of a song are the same thing, that’s even a better chance that you have your answer. If you don’t know whether to go with the first chord or the last chord, then you can… 2.)

For the English guitar, the open chord is C major (C–E–G–C–E–G); for the Russian guitar, which has seven strings, it is G major (D–G–B–D–G–B–D)….Creating any kind of open tuning.

Depends on the scale length of your guitar, on a “standard” 25″ scale, you could comfortably tune up to A standard with . 008 gauge strings. Anything lighter than . 008 gauge is normally not very strong and really shouldn’t be used.
