Farther east, the Outer Terai comprises the Kapilvastu, Rupandehi, Nawalparasi, Parsa, Bara, Rautahat, Sarlahi, Mahottari, Dhanusa, Siraha, Saptari, Sunsari, Morang and Jhapa districts.

This region is a part of the Gangetic water- shed comprising 20 districts (CBS 2002) (Fig. 1). The Terai plain consists of Quaternary and recent alluviums that were deposited over the Siwalik rocks (predominantly conglomer- atic in nature).

Topographically, Nepal is divided into three distinct ecological regions. These are the Mountains, Hills, and Terai (or plains). The Mountain region ranges in altitude from about 4,800 metres to 8,839 metres above sea level and covers a land area of 51,817 square kilometres.

Economically, the Terai is the most fertile and productive region of Nepal where agriculture dominates. The main agricultural products are rice, jute, sugar, mustard, tobacco, herbs and spices. Most of the agro-based industries are here. In addition, the region is rich in forestry.

The Inner Terai Valleys of Nepal comprise several elongated river valleys in the southern lowland Terai part of the country. These tropical valleys are enclosed by the Himalayan foothills, viz the Mahabharat Range and the Sivalik Hills farther south.

Tarai, also spelled Terai, region of northern India and southern Nepal running parallel to the lower ranges of the Himalayas. A strip of undulating former marshland, it stretches from the Yamuna River in the west to the Brahmaputra River in the east.

South of bhabar, the streams and rivers re-emerge and create a wet swampy & marshy region known as Terai.

The Terai is a region of grasslands, savannas and forests between the foots of the Hilly region. Terai region covers about 17% of the total area of Nepal. The Terai stretches from the international border with India in the Far-Western region to the Easter region. It is located at an altitude of 67-300m (220-980 ft.).

Today, 50% of the population of Nepal live in the Terai – making it the most highly populated region in the country. Domestic consumption of timber and firewood, as well as illegal logging, have also contributed to fast disappearing of Terai forests in Nepal.
