Iron, glass, steel, and many chemicals such as shampoos, paints, and medicines are manufactured in the Northeast.

You know that baked beans are big in the Northeast, thanks to Boston’s “Beantown” nickname, and of course dishes like clam chowder, lobster rolls, and Boston cream pie have a reach that is far beyond the borders of New England.

Northeastern Chinese cuisine is a style of Chinese cuisine in Northeast China. Another distinct feature that distinguishes Northeastern cuisine from other Chinese cuisines is the serving of more raw vegetables and raw seafood in the coastal areas.

The Northeast Region’s two largest industries, Retail Trade and Local Government, traded places over the 1990 – 94 period. The largest industry in 1990, Local Government, fell to second place in 1994 while Retail Trade rose to first with 19.9 percent of covered employment.

Other Northern industries–weapons manufacturing, leather goods, iron production, textiles–grew and improved as the war progressed.

Northern industrialization expanded rapidly following the War of 1812. Industrialized manufacturing began in New England, where wealthy merchants built water-powered textile mills (and mill towns to support them) along the rivers of the Northeast.

The South didn’t need smokestack industry, as such. Factories are expensive to build, to staff, to operate, to supply. The South had exportable product, cotton, indigo, grains, soft wood, turpentine, and the land and climate as a means of production, (No winters.).

The Industrial Revolution transformed economies that had been based on agriculture and handicrafts into economies based on large-scale industry, mechanized manufacturing, and the factory system. New machines, new power sources, and new ways of organizing work made existing industries more productive and efficient.

The industrial revolution in the North, during the first few decades of the 19th century, brought about a machine age economy that relied on wage laborers, not slaves. Northerners did not need slaves for their economy and fought a war to free them.

The North had rocky soil and cold winters. The South had a mild climate and fertile soil, which was good for farming. The North also had more resources available. These resources were needed for the manufacturing that was being done.

These included the production of shoes, leather tanning, papermaking, gun making, and hat making. Mechanization greatly added to the profits as it required very few employees to take care of an entire plant. As more U.S. factories turned out more home-created products, there was an increase in consumer spending.

The primary Union Civil War flags were the Unites States flag, known as the Stars and Stripes, and the regimental colors.

The Union is named after its declared goal of preserving the United States, in union with the CSA states. “Union” has often been used as a synonym for “the northern states loyal to the United States government;” in this meaning, the Union consisted of 20 free states and five border states.
