The United States and it’s government changed in the late 1700s and early 1800s was slavery of people in the North and South. The North was industrialized by getting industries and factories and urban areas. Stated that through slavery would continue in the South, it would be banned in the territory won from Mexico.

By that definition, the United States is at war in five places right now: Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen. (Update: A US-led coalition is now bombing Islamic State targets in Syria. So let’s provisionally bump this number up to six.)

The early 1800s saw the United States quickly grow in size. New immigrants and new land meant a bigger and stronger country. It also meant displacing thousands of Native Americans and the continued spread of slavery.

In the 1800s, America grew very fast. In 1803, the United States bought the Louisiana Territory from France. From 1800 to 1860, there were 17 new states. In the 1800s, millions of immigrants came from other countries.

March 1 – Justice Samuel Chase is acquitted of impeachment charges by the U.S. Senate. April 27 – Battle of Derne: United States Marines and Berbers attack the Tripolitan city of Derna (The “Shores of Tripoli”). June 4 – The First Barbary War ends between Tripoli and the United States of America.

The 1850s was a pivotal decade in the 19th century. In the United States, tensions over the institution of slavery became prominent and dramatic events hastened the nation’s movement towards civil war. In Europe, new technology was celebrated and the great powers fought the Crimean War.

Crimean War, (October 1853–February 1856), war fought mainly on the Crimean Peninsula between the Russians and the British, French, and Ottoman Turkish, with support from January 1855 by the army of Sardinia-Piedmont.

On March 4, 1865, Abraham Lincoln took the oath of office for the second time. He began by stating that there was no need for an “extended address” or an elaborate discussion of “the progress of our arms.” He refused to make any prediction as to when the war would end. …

On June 16, 1858, newly nominated senatorial candidate Abraham Lincoln addresses the Illinois Republican Convention in Springfield and warns that the nation faces a crisis that could destroy the Union.

In the Gospel of Mark 3:25, Jesus states, “And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.” That is in response to the scribes’ claim that “by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils.” In the Gospel of Matthew 12:25, “Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto him, Every kingdom divided against …

Abraham Lincoln

Lincoln paraphrased the following passage from the Bible, Matthew 12:25, when he spoke of a house divided: Lincoln felt that the ideals of freedom for all and the institution of slavery could not coexist — morally, socially, or legally — under one nation.

The last words Abraham Lincoln said were “She won’t think anything about it”, in answer to his wife’s inquiry “What will Miss Harris think of my hanging on to you so?” This happened on April 14th, 1865, right before he was shot.

Abraham Lincoln famously stated that “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” Lincoln’s remarks would prove prescient given the great civil war to come.

In his inaugural address, Lincoln promised not to interfere with the institution of slavery where it existed, and pledged to suspend the activities of the federal government temporarily in areas of hostility. The government, insisted Lincoln, would “hold, occupy, and possess” its property and collect its taxes.

President Lincoln’s First Inaugural Address focused on reassuring the Southern states that the president would not try to strip them of their slaves and that he would try to find a way to help them secure slavery if it would make them happy.
