Types Of Modern Communication

Verbal communication between people has been used for thousands of years. Native Americans used smoke signals, drum beats, and torches in key positions. Interestingly, this torch/lantern concept was still in use during the American Revolutionary War. That’s how Revere was told if the British were coming by land or sea.

Visual storytelling is one of the oldest and most powerful forms of communication.

Hand gestures, body language, and facial expressions are also a means of communication. Dance and music were also very ancient means of communication. Messengers with verbal messages, signal fires, totems, banners, cave art, etc. were ancient means of communication that predate history.

For example, we have the idiophones which have to do with high sounding instruments that produce their own messages just by beating. The Yoruba talking drum, the Igbo Ikoro, Ogene and Ekwe are examples of these. Symbolic displays and gestures are also traditional non-verbal ways of communication.
