The Comedy mask is known as Thalia, who in Greek mythology is the Muse of Comedy and Idyllic Poetry, portrayed as a happy, cheerful young woman crowned with ivy. The Tragedy mask is known as Melpomene, who is the Muse of Tragedy.

In Greek theatre the actors all wore exaggerated masks to communicate character. These were made of wood or leather and amplified the voice so that actors could be heard in the immense Greek amphitheatres .

The Greek Mask. There are no surviving masks that were actually worn from Ancient Greek Theater. This is due in part to the fact that they were made from perishable material such as “stiffened linen or wood” (MAE).

When depicting women, actors wore body stockings, with a progastreda and a prosterneda to make their bodies appear feminine. Some plays even called for actors to wear animal costumes.

The theater was constructed of three major parts: skene, orchestra, theatron. The skene was originally a hut, tent, or booth; skene means “tent” and refers to a wooden wall having doors and painted to represent a palace, temple or whatever setting was required.
