Frederick Douglass was a fearless leader who was a runaway slave. Frederick was fearless because he had the courage to run away and get punished. Frederick was also very stubborn or strong-willed because he didn’t give up on anything or anyone.

Frederick Douglass was an escaped slave who became a prominent activist, author and public speaker. He became a leader in the abolitionist movement, which sought to end the practice of slavery, before and during the Civil War.

By 1845 he had become well-known for his performances at abolitionist rallies, but he was so articulate and intelligent that many people had begun to doubt he had ever actually been a slave. He wrote his Narrative both to “prove” his identity, and to bring his eloquent indictment of slavery to a wider audience.

Douglas (occasionally spelled Douglass) is a common surname of Scottish origin, thought to derive from the Scottish Gaelic dubh glas, meaning “black stream”. There are numerous places in Scotland from which the surname is derived. The surname has developed into the given name Douglas.

Empowerment and Responsibility. Douglass devoted his life to abolish slavery but his work did not end when in 1861 President Lincoln ended the institution of slavery. Douglass fought for civil rights and to empower African Americans to develop their own skills and to take responsibility for their actions.

Fredrick Douglass is a hero because in the 1800s he was a former slave who became one of the great American anti- slavery leaders, and was a supporter of womens rights. He also started an abolition journal, The North Star in 1847, which was a journal on slavery and anti-slavery.

By 1860, Douglass was well known for his efforts to end slavery and his skill at public speaking. During the Civil War, Douglass was a consultant to President Abraham Lincoln and helped convince him that slaves should serve in the Union forces and that the abolition of slavery should be a goal of the war.

Douglass regarded the Civil War as the fight to end slavery, but like many free blacks he urged President Lincoln to emancipate the slaves as a means of insuring that slavery would never again exist in the United States. Through a merger in 1851, Douglass created a new newspaper entitled Frederick Douglass’ Paper.

Frederick Douglass was a profoundly influential man during his time. He was a pioneer in the abolitionist movement, even serving as an advisor to the president of the United States.

As slave lore tells it, the North Star played a key role in helping slaves to find their way—a beacon to true north and freedom. Many former slaves, including historical figures like Tubman, used the celestial gourd, or dipper, to guide them on their journey north.

John Brown did not make it easy for people to love him—until he died on the gallows. Frederick Douglass, from his first meeting with Brown in 1847, through a testy but important relationship in the late 1850s, had long viewed the visionary abolitionist with a combination of admiration and ambivalence.

Douglass writes that Lincoln “was emphatically the black man’s President: the first to show any respect to their rights as men.”

There’s no one right way. Most common in the US is to add ‘s to mark the possessive after all singular nouns except Greek names ending in -es. In English, as in German, it’s wrong to add an apostrophe to form a plural. And you’ll notice in #3 that Harpers Ferry is spelled without an apostrophe.
