What Can Be Recycled Curbside

The basic phases in recycling are the collection of waste materials, their processing or manufacture into new products, and the purchase of those products, which may then themselves be recycled. Typical materials that are recycled include iron and steel scrap, aluminum cans, glass bottles, paper, wood, and plastics.

What is it? There are three main types of recycling: primary, secondary, and tertiary. Primary recycling, also known as closed loop recycling, is the process of turning one thing into more of the same thing, like paper into more paper or soda cans into more soda cans.

• Paper including newspapers, magazines, and mixed paper.
• Cardboard (OCC)
• Glass bottles and jars.
• Rigid plastic products.
• Metal containers, including tin, aluminum, and steel cans.
• Food waste, if your city has an organics collection program.

The materials that can be recycled are glass, aluminum, plastic water bottles, metal scrap, different kinds of paper, electronics –computers, cellular phones, keyboards, batteries and other small electronic equipment, textile, wood, wire, cables, plastic product, rubber, etc.

What Can and Can’t be Recycled

• Paper: office paper, magazines, newspapers and junk mail.
• Cardboard.
• Green, clear and brown glass bottles and jars.
• Juice and milk cartons.
• All hard plastic bottles and containers marked, but no lids please.
• Steel (tin) and aluminium cans and empty aerosols.

Here are the top things that recyclers do NOT want to see come into their facility:

1. Plastic bags and wraps.
2. Bagged recyclables.
3. Anything that can ‘tangle’ around stuff.
4. Hazardous materials.
5. Batteries, including lithium ion.
6. Diapers.
7. Electronics.
8. Food & food soiled recyclables.

No clothing There are places to recycle clothing, such as Goodwill or Salvation Army, but a curbside recycling bin is not the way to go. Clothing clogs up the machinery at the recycling facility so employees must keep a watchful eye to try to pull out errant clothing.

Please do not put them into your green recycling bin: food. clothes, shoes and textiles. wood.

• Make a braided rug.
• Make pot holders.
• Make a scrubbing sponge.
• Use the elastic to make stylish carrying straps.
• Use them for patches.
• Stuff toys or pillows with them.
