Whether they come to nibble on the leaves or enjoy the fruit itself, animals like deer, squirrels, rabbits, raccoons and possum are attracted to grapevines. If the wildlife population is small and damage to your harvest minimal, the easiest solution is to plant a few more vines so you have enough grapes to share.

A wide variety of fruits and vegetables – including apples, grapes, cherries, pears, carrots, and snap peas – are eaten in nature by deer. Therefore, it is safe to feed deer these fruits.

Can deer eat grapes? They certainly can. Deer are attracted to everything sweet, including grapes. They’re not only fond of these fruits but also love eating their vines.

Deer Food: Grape (Vitus spp.) Description: There are many species of grape throughout the white-tailed deer’s range, but all species seem to serve as good sources of deer forage.

In spring and summer, favorite foods for deer include leaves, fruits, and grasses. In fall and winter, they eat fungi, acorns, twigs, and buds from plants. Like most hooved animals, white-tailed deer are ruminants. They have four-chambered stomachs that help them eat hard-to-digest foods.

At night they typically use darkness, and silence, as a shield against predators. At night they also sleep in hidden places. Some deer at night also find a suitable place around tall bushes and scrape the ground to make a comfortable bed for them to sleep or rest during the night.

Deer usually like to hide in thick bushes during the day, and they cover themselves up very well. In some cases, female deer also help the newborn deer to hide properly, and they even tuck them in before plopping beside them in a protective stance.

Generally, once per 30 minutes deer will stand and stretch and they may urinate or defecate before laying back down. They may even stand, urinate in their bed and lay back down in it. This 30-minute cycle of rest and standing has also been reported in the literature for axis deer.

Nighttime Activity These animals are more active at night than they are during the day, even though the day is generally warmer — in winter, deer sleep in direct sunlight to stay warm. At night, deer move frequently and walk into the wind, so that they can respectively avoid and detect predators in the area.

Deer spend more time bedded (about 70 percent) than in any other behavior or activity. Bedding periods last an average of 30 minutes. Deer are creatures of habit and may bed in the same location repeatedly.

Deer become nocturnal because of pressure. Either from hunting or other human activity. Deer change movement habits because of pressure, other human activity in the area, changes in cover or changes in bedding areas as related to feed areas.

Spotted a Rival Deer If you spot a deer with its ears back, head down, staring at a specific spot, another deer is close by. Deer don’t usually make eye-contact, so staring at the other deer is a high-level threat. Be prepared for another deer to come into view and a fight to break out.

“Deer do have a mid-day activity period, before, during and after the rut,” Steffen said. But those studies also show considerable deer movement at mid-day. The middle of the day is certainly a good time to be in the woods, but many people don’t realize that fact.

As a lifelong hunter, I can tell you that deer tend to stay put in dense cover when it’s raining hard. Of course they still get wet, but for whatever reason they don’t seem to move around much in rough stormy weather.
