Rocinante

The plot revolves around the adventures of a noble (hidalgo) from La Mancha named Alonso Quixano, who reads so many chivalric romances that he loses his mind and decides to become a knight-errant (caballero andante) to revive chivalry and serve his nation, under the name Don Quixote de la Mancha.

Quixote is considered insane because he “see[s] in his imagination what he didn’t see and what didn’t exist.” He has a set of chivalry-themed hallucinations. His madness consists in his trusting his imagination over his perception, and his imagination is captivated by the values of chivalry books.

What causes Don Quixote to lose his mind? Reading too many books of chivalry. How does Don Quixote convince Sancho Panza to become his squire? He promises him an island and he will be its governor.

Don Quixote’s sidekick is his squire Sancho Panza. Sancho Panza is a short, pot-bellied peasant whose appetite, common sense, and vulgar wit serve as a foil to the idealism of his master. He is notable for his many pertinent proverbs.

Don Quixote teaches us that life is to be challenged. That passion and discipline of a determined soul are a foundational element of being a leader. Quixote does not accept current reality. He forces his creative imagery, his commitment, and his happiness on it.
