He was orphaned at an early age. His father, a wealthy London brewer named Robert Meggot, died when the boy was only four. His mother, Amy Elwes, followed not too long afterward. When she died, the family fortune, an estimated £100,000 (about $29 million today), passed to her son.

The man whom Dickens eventually mentions in his letters and who strongly resembles the character portrayed by Dickens’ illustrator, John Leech, was a noted British eccentric and miser named John Elwes (1714–1789).

Religion in A Christmas Carol: Some Hidden Elements That would certainly be sense-making if Scrooge is of Jewish origin. Even his first name, Ebenezer, certainly alludes to Jewish origins – as does the first name of his deceased business partner, Jacob Marley (Grossman 1996, 50).

How does Fezziwig die? He falls ill with pneumonia. He is struck in the head by a horse’s hoof. Fezziwig does die in the novel, but the manner of his death is unspecified.

Marley appeared to Scrooge because he wanted to help him make more of his life. When he sees Scrooge he explains why he became a ghost. He said it was because he had not been a better man during his lifetime.

Role in book. Seven years prior to A Christmas Carol, Jacob dies of unknown circumstances with his heir being Ebenezer Scrooge, his friend, and business partner. Marley appears to Scrooge, warning him to change his ways before he ends up like Marley and the other ghosts they once knew.

Marley’s Ghost can be seen as a physical representation of the Christian belief system of heaven and hell and the importance of repentance and redemption.

It becomes clear that Marley’s punishment is not to be condemned to Hell, a place of eternal torment from which there is no release and no escape, but that he is in Purgatory, as he has been constantly wandering the earth in the seven years since his death.

The Ghost of Christmas Past represents memory. She shows Scrooge events from his past in hopes of shedding light on how Scrooge became bitter and miserly and to remind him that he was not always that way. If the Ghost can help Scrooge remember who he once was, there may still be hope for him.

From the first ghost, the Ghost of Christmas Past, Scrooge learns that the simple things in life like love, friendship, and laughter hold value.

It’s not disclosed exactly where in Camden this struggling family reside, but Dickens might have had in mind one of his own childhood homes at 16 Bayham Street, where he lived in 1823. This was a bleak time for the Dickens family, with mounting debts that would lead to the imprisonment of Charles’s father.

Ebenezer Scrooge was a banker. The reason Ebenezer Scrooge was so rich was that he made his living lending other people money and charging interest. He worked in a counting house, and he owned the counting house because it was just him and Bob Cratchit.

You’ll be with me, just like last year,” says the headmaster in the TV adaptation of A Christmas Carol, as it becomes horribly clear that Scrooge was sexually abused or raped every Christmas at his boarding school after all the other pupils had left.

BTW – Dickens’ novella makes clear that Fan was much younger than Ebenezer (“and a little girl, much younger than the boy, came darting in, and putting her arms about his neck, and often kissing him, addressed him as her “Dear, dear brother.”).

Fan Scrooge is a minor character in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. She is the late little sister of Ebenezer Scrooge and the mother of Fred.

But in this version, Scrooge is quite older than Fran. Just watch the film and see how young she is compared to the boy, when she comes to fetch him at the boarding school. Therefore, Ebenezer didn’t cause the death of his mother since he was older than Fran.

The backstory of “Fan” creates an enormous plot-hole in the Dickens classic. Most experts seem to agree that “Fan”, Ebenezer’s beloved sister, died in childbirth to her son, Fred, helping to explain why Ebenezer so despised his nephew.

Marley visits Scrooge to warn him to change his life and to tell him 3 spirits will be visiting him soon. What does the woman tell Scrooge about himself? The woman tells Scrooge that he is too enamored with money.

In the novel, we also find out that Scrooge did have a sister, once upon a time: when the Ghost of Christmas Past takes Scrooge back in time to his childhood, we meet “little Fan”. She was a loving sister, kind-hearted but delicate; and she grew up to have a son (Scrooge’s nephew) before she died.

The Spirit reminds Scrooge that his sister died young. These visions help the reader understand how Scrooge became the person he is. One of the visions Scrooge sees is his younger sister when he goes past to his past and sees himself as a boy. When Scrooge was a young boy, he was shipped off to boarding school.

The only person in Scrooge’s family that means anything to his, is his sister, Fan. Fan represents all that is good in life. She was young and hopeful. Fan loved Scrooge and comes to get him to go home.

Explain. He said that she died a woman and had one child. Scrooge feels uneasy because he is so rude to his nephew even though that is the only living memory of his sister that he has. Even though his father hated him, his sister loved him very much and missed him while he was at his boarding school.

Fan (unknown married name) (née Scrooge) was the younger sister of Ebenezer Scrooge and the mother of Fred Scrooge.
