Following Manasseh’s death, Amon began his reign of Judah at the age of 22, and reigned for two years. The Jerusalem Bible describes Manasseh and Amon as “two wicked kings”. II Kings states that Amon “did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, as did Manasseh his father.

Ahaz is portrayed as an evil king in the Second Book of Kings (2 Kings 16:2). Edwin R. Thiele concluded that Ahaz was co-regent with Jotham from 736/735 BC, and that his sole reign began in 732/731 and ended in 716/715 BC….

Ahab became king of Israel in the thirty-eighth year of King Asa of Judah, and reigned for twenty-two years, according to 1 Kings….

Manasseh, king of Judah, was certainly a cruel tyrant. Manasseh was guilty of immorality, he practiced every conceivable evil and perversion, devoted himself to witchcraft and was a murderer; even sacrificing his sons to a pagan god. God’s judgment fell on Manasseh. He was bound in chains and taken away to Babylon.

During the siege the prophet Jeremiah (q.v.) urged patient submission to the dominion of the Babylonians, which he regarded as the will of God, but royal officials and Jewish notables denounced him and he was accused of desertion and imprisoned.

Hoshea

Jeremiah probably died about 570 bce. According to a tradition that is preserved in extrabiblical sources, he was stoned to death by his exasperated fellow countrymen in Egypt.

Matthew begins by calling Jesus the son of David, indicating his royal origin, and also son of Abraham, indicating that he was an Israelite; both are stock phrases, in which son means descendant, calling to mind the promises God made to David and to Abraham.

David was the youngest of eight sons of Jesse, a farmer and sheep breeder of the Israelite tribe of Judah. David likely spent much of his boyhood tending his family’s flock. One day he was summoned from the fields by the prophet Samuel, who anointed him king of Israel while Saul was still king.

Preparations for building the temple At first, King David wanted to build a temple for God, but according to the Bible, God said to him through the prophet Nathan, “You are not to build a house for my Name, because you are a warrior and have shed blood.” However, he chose Solomon to build the temple.

God sent the Prophet Samuel to Bethlehem and guided him to David, a humble shepherd and talented musician. He brought the young man to Saul’s court, where his harp was so soothing that Saul called for David whenever he was vexed by an “evil spirit” sent by God (I Samuel 9:16).

The Bible calls David “a man after God’s own heart” twice. The first time was by Samuel who anointed him as backslidden King Saul’s successor, “But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart” (1 Sam. 13:14, NKJV).

Having died at the age of 969, he lived the longest of all human figures mentioned in the Bible….
