In an appendix, all figures, tables, and other visuals should be labelled with the letter of the corresponding appendix followed by a number indicating the order in which each appears.

Each appendix begins on a new page. The heading should be “Appendix,” followed by a letter or number [e.g., “Appendix A” or “Appendix 1”], centered and written in bold. Appendices must be listed in the table of contents [if used].

The appendix (or appendices) goes after the reference list or bibliography in your assignment. This places it as the last thing within your assignment.

Centre the label and title. Change the label to bold type e.g. Appendix A. If the material is from a published source,use the word ‘Source:’ followed by a short citation (author and year of publication) and place it at the bottom left of the appendix item. Enter the full reference in your reference list.

For concise and meaningful writing, do your best to avoid these words and phrases in your admission essays.

• 1) Contractions.
• 2) Idioms.
• 3-5) “So on,” “etc,” “and so forth“
• 6) Clichés.
• 7-11) “Thing,” “stuff,” “good,” “bad,” “big“
• 12) Slang, jargon, teen speak.
• 13) Rhetorical questions.

If you write significantly less than the word count there is a risk that your work will not adequately address the assignment or the learning outcomes. Your work will be assessed on its academic merits and this will be reflected in the mark awarded and the feedback on the piece of work.

If written, they will actually count them, looking for repetition. If submitted electronically, they can, among other things look at the properties of the essay, or they can simply highlight the whole document, which will also give you the number of words.

Names are certainly considered words. By definition, a word is a single unit of language that means something and can be either spoken or written. Specifically, in English, a name is a type of noun referred to as a proper noun, and it is always capitalized.

We recommend writing 150-180 words for Task 1, and 250-280 words for Task 2. On average, most people write about 10 words per line, which means you don’t have to count every word, just the lines. You should be practicing your essays on IELTS Answer sheets.

Word Counting in IELTS

• Big or small, every word counts.
• All the hyphenated words such as state-of-the-art, self-improvement, fine-tune are considered as 1 word.
• Dates, time and number are also considered as a word.
• The symbols written along with numbers are not counted.

If you need proof, have a look at any of your essays and count how many words per line you write. The requirement for an essay is at least 250 words, which equals 28 lines and you should count the lines, not the words. Any letter or report should be at least 150 words long, that’s 17 lines.
